About us

KATAKA is founded in 2006 on the basis of a simple and elegant idea of making a segmented spindle which was developed during the late 90ies by the Danish mechanical engineer Jens Jørren Sørensen.

KATAKA means “golden chain” in Sanskrit and refers to the spindle segment – the heart of the KATAKA technology.

The company is based in the Greater Copenhagen area.

One of the landmarks of Copenhagen is the Rundetaarn (The Round Tower) which was built on the initiative of King Christian IV (1588-1648). On July 7th 1637, the foundation stone for Rundetaarn was laid.

The spiral walk is unique in European architecture. The 209 m long spiral ramp winds itself 7,5 times round the hollow core of the tower, forming the only connection between the individual parts of the building complex.

From the platform, 34.8 m above the street, the visitor has a magnificent view of the old part of Copenhagen. Rundetaarn is the oldest functioning observatory in Europe and thus combining science and engineering with an innovative and novel design approach.

The KATAKA actuator was officially launched at an event in the observatory in Rundetaarn on 20 August 2008.

We are proud to say that the segmented spindle is another unique and radical innovation with origin in Copenhagen. A brief introduction can be found in the April 2009 copy of Teknisk Nyt Special (in Danish only)
